While I am appreciative of ASNMU’s efforts, this would be assumed at any respectable University. The fact that they are not extending the hours the weekend before Finals and that the library isn’t affected by the hour extensions is not encouraging to the type of academic culture Northern is purporting to encourage. If you want students to do well, and to excel, why not make the Library 24/7, especially during the most crucial days of the semester.

The short answer to your comment is that we don’t really have enough staff to be open overnight. We’re open 93 hours a week, and have to have two full-time staff here at all times, for safety and security reasons.

I know some academic libraries are open 24/7, and I know of some that are open 24/5, but I also know that many (and I’d guess most) academic libraries have the same issue we do–we don’t have the money for the additional full-time staff to make it happen.

While I have you here, what are your library needs at this time of year? Do you need to consult materials that aren’t available online? Or do you need a place to study? Do you need to use a printer? Aside from being open longer hours, what can we do to help?

    Thanks for your comment.
