			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>On Tuesday, May 29, and Wednesday, May 30, Instructional Design &amp; Technology is offering 9 workshops.</p>
<p>These sessions are being offered “à la carte” to all NMU instructors. You are welcome to attend all 9, or select only the topics that are most interesting to you and fit into your schedule.  We are also scheduling “open lab” times each day, where you can start practicing and applying the things you learn in the workshops, with IDT staff on hand to provide assistance if needed.</p>
<p>Workshops will be led by IDT staff.  Sessions will cover a wide range of topics, including podcasting, audio and video editing, web conferencing, classroom technology, and active learning. An EduCat Transition Overview presentation is also included in the program.</p>

<p>The purpose of the webinar is to provide relevant tools, knowledge, and skills on Instructional Design effective practices for faculty and practitioners to apply to online and blended course design and development. This information, as aligned within the Community of Inquiry (CoI) Framework, can assist faculty, course designers, instructional designers, and other practitioners in increasing engagement, learning, and success in the classroom.</p>
<p>The audience will learn specific and fundamental tools and effective practices from Instructional Design that can positively impact the creation and development of an online course, strengthen the effectiveness of instructional delivery, and increase the opportunities for deeper student engagement and success. Additionally, participants will examine how the information can be the piece missing from the transition from theory to practice and utilize the examples for filling the gap between the two realms. <p>The Sloan Consortium invites you to <a href="http://sloanconsortium.org/conference/2012/aln/call-for-presentations">submit a proposal</a> for presentation and/or workshops for the 18th Annual Sloan-C International Conference on Online Learning to be held October 10-12, 2012 at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort in Lake Buena Vista, FL.</p>
<p>Last year’s conference attracted nearly 1,500 onsite and 250+ virtual participants to more than 230 presentations, as well as 60 exhibits, 40 vendor showcase sessions, 18 total pre- and post-conference workshops, keynote and plenary addresses, and a variety of other special events.</p>
<p>The theme of this year’s conference is <strong>&#8220;At a Crossroads: Online Education in a Complex World.&#8221;</strong> A crossroad, an intersection, however we define it, there is no doubt that the future of online education will be shaped by important choices that confront us today. The higher education landscape is changing rapidly and we have much to consider.</p>
<p>The 2012 Sloan-C International Conference on Online Learning is the premier forum for approaching the complex questions that face all concerned with the future of our students, faculty, colleagues, and institutions. Join us for this year’s gathering and participate in the conversations that will provide crucial insights and help us make the decisions that will chart the future course of high quality online education.</p>
<p align="center"><strong>Proposals must be submitted by May 7, 2012</strong></p>
<p>Our conference seeks proposals for workshops and presentations that reflect the implications for the field of specific e-learning experience and practices. Proposals that address blended learning, issues of diversity, international applications of online learning, open educational resources, social networking, online learning and community colleges, and/or K-12 online education are especially encouraged. We look to share best practices and persistent challenges in online learning as they relate to pedagogy, learning activities, instructional design and course development, faculty development and training, student services, accessible learning opportunities, academic planning and strategy, and research through the assessment and evaluation of learning.</p>
<p>We especially encourage proposals from those in quickly-evolving institutions, such as K-12 schools and community colleges, as well as proposals that explore emerging technologies (mobile, social media, open education resources) to assist fellow educators in improving their understanding of online education in a complex world.</p>
<p>Proposals that highlight and demonstrate research, application and effective practices are requested in the following seven tracks:</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>IDT will be hosting a group participation site for the <strong><em>Managing the Online Learning Environment </em></strong>online seminar on Monday, March 19 from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. in LRC 112.</p>
<p><em></em>This three hour seminar is presented by the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI).  “In the online environment, a course is available 24/7. The continuous accessibility of the online classroom demands that you develop new time management strategies. In addition, managing learner issues can be more difficult in the online learning environment than in a traditional learning environment. For some learners, the fact that they do not have to look a person in the eye makes it easier to act differently and exhibit inappropriate behaviors. There are also ethical issues of plagiarism that need to be managed and legal issues, such as copyright, that need to be considered.</p>
<p>Dr. Tina Stavredes will present a practical, hands-on workshop for faculty members, instructional designers and technologists, and others supporting online learning who are interested in discovering new ways to manage the online course environment. The workshop will be presented in an interactive fashion with presentation of information interspersed with polls, discussions, and hands-on activities. Participants will leave the workshop with a ‘toolkit’ of ideas, templates, worksheets, and approaches to manage their online course.”</p>

<li><strong><em>Understanding and Working with Student Resistance to Active Learning</em> on Friday, December 16 at 2:00 p.m.<br />
</strong>As faculty move towards implementation of more learner-centered teaching methods, they are sometimes dismayed by the students&#8217; reactions.  Students often resist more active teaching methods, behavior that seems counter-productive to their own long-term interests.  This session will focus on describing an integrated theoretical model of student resistance to active teaching based on four major interdependent elements including situational factors, negative classroom experiences, cognitive development, and readiness to change; the model also incorporates the work of Carol Dweck on mindsets.  New instruments to measure student readiness to change will also be described as part of suggestions on how faculty can utilize the resistance model to better understand their students and develop more effective interventions.  <a href="http://tltgroup.roundtablelive.org/events?eventId=365557&amp;EventViewMode=EventDetails">Get more information from the TLT web site</a>.</li>

The EduCat gradebook is a very   flexible tool with a fair amount of complexity.  Learn how to set up   your gradebook to calculate final grades by sum of points or percentage   weight.  Learn how to create grade categories and items, drop low   scores, mark items as extra credit, curve grades, set up letter grades, and   export to a spreadsheet.  Entering grades and feedback will also be   demonstrated.</td>

The students’   responses are tabulated, categorized, and projected as summary information on   a display in front of the class. In this 60 minute session, learn how to use   the TurningPoint software to create interactive slides natively in PowerPoint   with minimal learning curve. Engage students through active participation in   the class while providing immediate feedback to students regarding their   understanding of the material.</td>
